Who Am I?
I am a doctoral student at California Southern University working toward completion of a Psy.D in clinical psychology. My research explores the therapeutic experiences of Black men and women who have received mental health treatment from White therapists, as mistrust of White therapists is a significant barrier for Black Americans seeking mental health support. To ensure the success of therapy with Black clients, it is crucial to identify the factors that build trust in the therapeutic relationship.
What Am I Doing?
In an effort to identify the factors that build trust in the therapeutic relationship between Black clients and White mental health providers, I am seeking African American and Black adults who have received mental health treatment from a White therapist and are willing to share their experiences in therapy. The goal of this research is to enable mainstream mental health professionals to adapt their therapeutic approaches to better meet the cultural preferences of Black clients, ultimately building stronger, more trusting relationships with clients who often struggle with cultural mistrust.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the study, you must meet the following criteria:
· be at least 18 years old, self-identify as Black or African American
· have received treatment from a White mental health provider since the year 2000.
· be capable of independent functioning mentally and emotionally
· be available for a 90-minute interview, which will be conducted via Zoom at your convenience
· be prepared to provide further information as needed for up to 14 days after the interview.
Upon completing the study, participants will receive a $25 gift card redeemable at Amazon!
